Nitrogen is a Key Driver for Gut Health

Researchers designed 25 different diets with varying levels of protein, carbohydrates, and fat to determine which foods feed good gut bacteria the best. They fed these diets to nearly a thousand mice, looking for patterns in whether the mice’s microbe species increased or decreased based on their diets. They found that nitrogen from protein was a primary food for bacteria and determines bacteria abundance.

Turmeric Delays and Mitigates Radiation-Induced Oral Mucositis

Researchers enlisted 80 patients getting radiation therapy combined with chemotherapy for their head and neck cancers. They gave half of them the usual iodine preparation. They had the other half gargle with a solution of the herb turmeric. The study showed that when compared with the traditional iodine gargle, “the group using turmeric as a mouthwash had delayed and reduced the levels of radiation-induced oral mucositis.”
