Men and Women May Have Different Risks for Alzheimer’s

Diabetics have an increased risk for dementia because of insulin signaling dysfunction. However, sex hormones may play a role as well, particularly since women are at greater risk of developing Alzheimer’s. To investigate this, they examined changes in estrogen, insulin, oxidative stress, and markers of Alzheimer’s in male and female middle-aged rats, some of which had type-2 diabetes and some of which served as controls. They found a number of differences between the male and female rats as well as those with and without type-2 diabetes. This indicates that treatment approaches should be different for each group.
