Antidepressants Reduce Likelihood of Surviving a Second Heart Attack

Researchers from the University of Zurich in Switzerland reviewed data from 8,911 heart attack patients who had been discharged from hospitals between March 2005 and August 2016. They found that 565 patients (6.3%) had received antidepressants at discharge. The researchers compared the patients who received these drugs with those who didn’t and found that the two groups had similar rates of stroke and repeat heart attacks, but those who had been prescribed the antidepressants were much less likely to survive the incident.
