This summertime favorite can
lower LDL cholesterol and
stop heart disease
I'm excited. Summer is right around the corner. And that means lots of great tasting fruit will be ripe and ready for eating. It's rarely a surprise to find out that one fruit or another is great for certain ailments. But researchers recently discovered a surprising benefit from a fruit that we don't hear much about.

The fruit is watermelon. We don't hear a lot of health benefits about watermelon. But it is definitely good for you. In the study, researchers found that this summer favorite protects your heart, even if you eat a high-fat diet.

The researchers in this study fed mice a high-fat diet. They looked at the buildup of bad lipoproteins like LDL cholesterol. They discovered that feeding the animals watermelon halved the rate of accumulation of LDL. The watermelon also helped control weight gain and fatty deposits inside blood vessels.

The researchers attributed the beneficial effects to citrulline. Citrulline is an amino acid that is in abundance in watermelon. This amino acid relaxes blood vessels.

Hippocrates said, "Let thy food by thy medicine and they medicine be thy food." I try to bring you costless remedies (where possible) for the most common afflictions we face. Please look to food first before drugs or supplements. A slice of watermelon a day might help prevent heart disease. Of course, I believe in eating foods ripe, and when in season! So make sure you're eating watermelon this summer!
