I've told you a lot about vitamin D lately. Now there's even more great news about this vitamin - especially if you're overweight or if you have diabetes or insulin resistance.

In the study, the researchers followed 741 pregnant women. They found that 70.6% of them were deficient in vitamin D (<25 nmol/L). For women who had gestational diabetes, the risk of severe deficiency (<12.5 nmol/L) was even higher. The authors concluded that vitamin D deficiency has a connection with insulin resistance.

I agree completely. Even with all of the great information I've reported, I still see patients who are low in this hormone/vitamin. And I even see deficiencies in the summer, when you'd expect to see more normal levels.

Almost all of us are deficient in vitamin D. And now we know it can contribute to obesity and diabetes. Obesity is epidemic. Insulin resistance is a huge part of the problem. As you put on weight, your insulin works less effectively. Your body responds by making more.

High insulin levels, as well as high blood sugar, can cause a host of degenerative diseases from coronary disease to cancer. Don't be fooled by the fact that the researchers conducted this study on pregnant women. The fact that severe deficiency was more prevalent if the women had gestational diabetes tells us there's an intimate association between the two hormones. (Vitamin D is actually more of a hormone than a vitamin.) So if you have diabetes, you must take vitamin D to help with your insulin problems.

Before you start taking it, get your vitamin D (25 hydroxy vitamin D) level checked. Now is a great time to do so. It's still warm outside and you should be at your highest level of the year. If you're not in the highest range now, that's not a good sign. You'll also want to check again in March or April, the end of winter. Almost all of us are low then. Even my vitamin D level was low!

If you're low, take up to 5,000 IU per day of vitamin D3. Healthy Resolve has a vitamin D3 product with 5,000 units in each capsule. That means you can take only one capsule daily, instead of the usual five to ten. Call 800-728-2288 to order.
