I’ve told you in the past that taking statin drugs to lower your cholesterol can be dangerous. In one of my warnings, I showed you how statin use can cause diabetes in susceptible people.
Besides, cholesterol isn’t the problem anyway. In fact, the so-called “bad” cholesterol – LDL cholesterol – isn’t the problem all my statin-prescribing colleagues think it is.
That’s because LDL only causes atherosclerosis when it becomes oxidized. Non-oxidized LDL is a pussycat.
So the next logical question is, “Is there a way to prevent LDL cholesterol from becoming oxidized?” The answer is yes. A new study says all you have to do is drink this juice….
In this study, researchers looked at one of my favorite drinks – pomegranate juice. I’ve told you about the wonders of pomegranate juice before – it works wonders on your health. And this study confirms what I’ve told you.
In this amazing study, the researchers looked at 20 men and women. All of them had significant carotid artery stenosis. Carotid artery stenosis refers to a narrowing of the carotid artery caused by a buildup of atherosclerotic plaque.
Before the study started, they took several measurements. They measured the patients' degree of carotid artery narrowing, their levels of oxidized LDL, their blood pressures, and their total antioxidant status.
Then the researchers gave half of the patients a glass of pomegranate juice every day for one year. For something as simple and as delicious as pomegranate juice, the results were absolutely astonishing.
Here’s What They Found
In the first year of the experiment, the narrowing of the arteries in the no pomegranate juice group increased 9%. Compare that to the juicers who had a 30% decrease! That’s a huge change.
And what about the levels of oxidized LDL? They decreased an average of 90%. In addition, the antioxidant status increased 130% and their blood pressures decreased 12%.
If Big Pharma could only come up with a drug that was 20% this good, it would be the most highly touted drug ever. But unfortunately for them, that’s not going to happen. You can’t patent pomegranates.
So if you have been told that you need a statin drug, ask your doctor to measure your oxidized LDL cholesterol. If it is 40 mol/L or less, forget it. No matter how high your total LDL levels are, it doesn’t matter as long as your oxidized LDL is low.
If it is higher than 40, don’t run down to your local pharmacy. Go to your grocery store instead and get some pure pomegranate juice, and drink at least four ounces a day.
When you recheck the oxidized LDL again in three months, the odds are good that it will be in the optimal range.
