Sexual malfunction can be a very upsetting problem for both men and women no matter what age. One of those problems in men is premature ejaculation or PE. PE is defined when ejaculation occurs shortly after or even before penetration. The statistics show that PE is the most common sexual complaint in men, even more common than ED. Approximately 35% of all men have the problem. But what causes it? The general consensus is that there are multiple causes. And one recent study indicates that one of the causes may be a lack of a hormone that you would never have thought of as being responsible for this problem.
Researchers looked at a group of 60 men with lifelong PE and 40 men without the condition. The group was divided into three groups. For four weeks, they gave each group an anti-depressant drug known to boost melatonin levels. Before the study started, they checked blood melatonin levels in all the men.

Amazingly, the men with PE had levels that were 70% less than the men without the problem. At the end of the four weeks, all that had changed. Not only did the men with PE come close to having normal melatonin levels, but along with that their symptoms also improved. According to the authors, "An increased plasma melatonin level can retard ejaculation, presumably by both central and peripheral mechanisms." So is there a natural, non-drug way to do the same thing?
The drugs the doctors used in the study boost melatonin levels by boosting the levels of a nerve chemical called serotonin. Under the influence of vitamin B3 (niacin), the body converts serotonin to melatonin. The natural way to increase serotonin levels is to take the amino acid 5-HTP. So the natural alternative to the drugs would be to try the following for four weeks. Take 100 mg of niacin, 100 mg of 5-HTP, and 10-20 mg of melatonin every night before bed. And take an additional 100 mg of 5-HTP along with 500 mg of another amino acid, l-tyrosine, in the morning. If your PE is caused by a melatonin deficiency, this will probably fix it.
