By now I hope everybody knows about the dangers of GMO foods. I have been reporting on this for years. GMO (genetically modified) foods are exceptionally contaminated with pesticides. And they are internally contaminated with chemical substances in the food that human beings have never been exposed to. The so-called safety studies that indicate they are harmless are short term and poorly done.
The reality is studies have linked them to the current outbreak of many chronic diseases. These include Alzheimer's, colitis, Crohn's disease, autism, Parkinson's, diabetes, anxiety, panic attacks, phobias, and thyroid cancer. And now, the lobbyists in congress want to pass a bill to guarantee that you can never be sure that you're not eating a GMO-produced food. That's the bad news. But the good news is that there's still some time to stop them.
Last summer, the House of Representatives passed the bill HR1599, which has come to be known as the DARK (Denying Americans the Right-to-Know) Act. If passed by the senate and signed by president Obama, the DARK act would:
- Prevent states from requiring labeling of GMO food.
- Virtually eliminate the FDA's ability to craft a national GMO labeling system.
- Allow “natural” foods to contain GMO ingredients.
Now who in the world would want to prevent the people from knowing what they are eating? It's only a handful of companies, such as Monsanto, Kraft, Kellogg's, PepsiCo, Coca Cola, Campbell's, and General Mills. Why? Because they stand to make more money than you can imagine.
Could you detect a deadly poison in a healthy-looking meal?

The fact is that most Americans don't want to eat these artificial and heavily contaminated foods. Polls show that 90% of Americans support labeling of GMO food. And they are not the only ones. More than 1.4 million Americans have joined a petition urging the FDA to require labeling of GMO food. And 64 nations around the world require labeling. The list includes Russia, China, and the European Union. What's wrong with the U.S.? Here's why people oppose GMO foods and any attempt to disguise them as real food.
GMO labeling will not increase food prices as their lobbyists suggest. Companies frequently change labels to highlight new innovations. And voluntary labeling simply will not work. Companies have been allowed to make voluntary non-GMO disclosures since 2001. But consumers are more confused than ever. Unlike what Monsanto tell us, GMO crops do not feed the world more effectively, just more expensively. Since GMO foods have been introduced, natural and GMO corn and soybean yields have increased at the same rate. And that's not all.
GMO crops have dramatically increased the use of herbicides. They have also increased the use of the chemical glyphosate — a probable human carcinogen — from 16 million pounds to more than 280 million pounds! But don't stop there. GMO crops have not only led to an increased use of herbicides, they have also led to the development of more toxic herbicides. As weeds have become resistant to glyphosate, farmers have turned to more toxic weed killers. These new wonders are now linked to cancer, Parkinson's disease, and reproductive problems. And here's maybe the best reason why people want to know if the food they are eating is genetically modified:
WE HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW!!
So unless you don't care about what you, your children, and your grandchildren are eating, please take a moment and go to www.justlabelit.org and learn more about this attack on your right to know. And when you've had enough, click on the “Take Action” tab on the upper right side of the home page. They make it very easy to let the FDA and your representatives know how you feel about being in the DARK.
