Easy way to prevent bedsores
If you or a loved one is ever bedridden for more than a few weeks, bedsores become a real concern. They affect one in every ten hospital patients. They can cause severe pain, can easily get infected, and treating them is difficult and expensive. Fortunately, there's an easy way to reduce the occurrence of bed sores.

A study, published in the journal Clinical Nutrition, looked at the effects of supplementing 50 hospitalized patients confined to bed with essential oils. They used eicosapentanoic acid (EPA) and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). EPA is found in fish oil supplements, and GLA in evening primrose oil and borage oil supplements. They also gave the patients vitamins A, C, and E. Then they compared these patients to 50 other patients who did not receive the nutrients.

The results? At the end of only one week, all of the patients had bedsores. But those who did not receive the supplements had 60% more sores. Why the improvement? It has to do with what causes bed sores in the first place.

Bedsores are caused by a decrease in oxygen in the skin and underlying tissues. Lying in one position squeezes the blood vessels in the pressured areas and deprives those areas of adequate blood flow. Less blood flow means less oxygen. And less oxygen quickly leads to a breakdown in the skin.

Why do the essential oils help? The authors found that the supplements improved the oxygen levels in hospitalized patients by a full 50%. That's a tremendous improvement. Clearly enough to decrease the tendency to get bedsores.

It's also important to remember that unless you're eating fish along with fresh vegetables at least three times a week, you are probably deficient in EPA. I don't usually eat fish that often. So I make sure I get enough EPA by taking three Complete Daily Oils softgels a day. This provides me with 300 mg of EPA, along with 200 mg of DHA, another critical essential oil. Plus it has other oils that provide extra protection.
