Does a Vegetarian Diet Reduce Breast Cancer Risk?

Researchers tracked over 50,000 women for five years to see if a vegetarian diet decreased breast cancer risk. The group turned out to have 26,193 women classified as vegetarians. The number of nonvegetarians was a little less and came to 24,211. The vegetarian group had 478 cases of breast cancer. The nonvegetarians had 414 cases. Even though the cancer rate was less in the nonvegetarian group, the difference was so small as to be statistically non-significant.

Anticoagulants Cause Microbleeds in the Brain After Valve-Replacement Surgery

Researchers in France conducted MRIs and questionnaire-based neurological tests with patients undergoing valve-replacement surgery. They found that 26% of the participants already had at least one microbleed before the surgery. Three days after surgery, a total of 40% had microbleeds, with 23% having new bleeds.

Magnets Can Help Improve Memory Function

Researchers had 17 participants complete auditory memory tasks that involved recognizing a pattern of tones after it was reversed. As they worked on the tasks, the researchers monitored their theta waves. They then had the participants repeat the tasks while receiving transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) at the same theta frequency. With the TMS, the participants did better on the tasks – as long as the TMS matched their natural theta rhythms. When it was arrhythmic, they performed similarly to their initial results.
