One in Seven Women Was at High Risk of Hip Fracture

Researchers at the University of East Anglia recruited over 12,000 women between the ages of 70 and 85 to participate in a study screening for risk of hip fracture. They had half of the women participate in a screening process called FRAX, which they used to identify the likelihood of a hip or major osteoporotic fracture. The other women received routine care as usual. The FRAX method found that approximately one in seven women was at high risk of hip fracture.

Researchers looked for influenza virus in the exhaled breath from 142 confirmed cases of people with influenza during natural breathing, prompted speech, spontaneous coughing, and sneezing. What was surprising is that the patients often shed the virus even without coughing or sneezing.

Soy and Cruciferous Vegetables Reduce Menopausal Symptoms

Researchers at the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center investigated the diets of 173 non-Hispanic white women and 192 Chinese-American women. The researchers were hoping to determine whether dietary factors could help minimize fatigue, hot flashes, night sweats, and menopause-like symptoms. The researchers found that consuming high levels of cruciferous vegetables and soy helped the women experience fewer menopausal symptoms. More soy was also helped to lower levels of fatigue.
