Do Seventh-day Adventists have the
secret to cancer prevention?
Cancer is one of the biggest health fears for most people. I know I don't want it! Today's medicine waits for you to get it. Then it quickly hustles you into toxic treatment when your mind is in a state of shock. And your health and wallet are often all the poorer for it. My good friend Frank Shallenberger, MD says that the best treatment for a disease is not to get it. That's an understatement.

I've extolled diet in these pages probably more than every other newsletter writer combined. And, for good reason. Diet is your ticket to health, especially with the fact that 41% of all people born today will be diagnosed with cancer sometime in their lives. But a new study says that you don't have to get cancer.

In this study, researchers assessed dietary patterns in 69,120 subjects in the Adventist Health Study-2. I've reported on Seventh-day Adventists in the past. They're unusually healthy, especially those eating the vegetarian diet promoted by the religion.

Here, a vegetarian diet decreased the risk of getting a gastrointestinal cancer by 24%, and a vegan diet reduced overall cancer risk by 16% in both sexes. You don't have to be vegan. The lacto-ovo vegetarian diets (which eat dairy and eggs) conferred a 25% decreased risk for GI tract cancer.

Research over the last 10-15 years supports the dietary recommendations I've made in these alerts and in my newsletter. I am vegetarian for spiritual reasons. I DO NOT require my patients to follow my lead here. I simply urge them to eat more uncooked plant foods. I do recommend that you eliminate all fast, fried, refined, and processed foods from your diet. Research has clearly linked red meat, both processed and unprocessed, to GI tract cancers. The form of iron therein may be the culprit.

Adventists are a great group to study. They are a cohesive group spiritually. So studying the health differences between those who are vegetarian and those eating meat to me is more reliable than many other formats of dietary surveys.

Take steps to protect yourself from cancer. Aside from eating more uncooked plants, make sure you eat organic where possible. And concentrate on eating what grows around you, ripe, when in season. Here is a way to significantly reduce your risk of a lethal disease and not cost you anything at all in the way of supplements or devices!
