Lower your blood pressure and relax your arteries with this superfood

Volume 13    |   Issue 24

As we enter different stages of life, we need to be more aware of different health issues that can affect us. And we need to be more focused on specific areas of prevention if we want to stay healthy into our senior years. This is particularly true for postmenopausal women, who are frequently prone to hypertension as well as arterial stiffness. These conditions are problematic because both raise the risk of cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death for women in the U.S.

Of course the usual way to treat high blood pressure is with prescription drugs. These, of course, have their associated side effects and risks. And they don't deal with the causes of high blood pressure or with the arterial stiffness that so often goes with it. Wouldn't it be better if you could lower your blood pressure naturally? I've told you about many remedies in the past that can help lower blood pressure including magnesium, garlic, fish oil, and nitric oxide. But I'm really impressed with this new research. Like most of my remedies, it's risk free, and it even tastes good.

For this study, researchers recruited 48 women. All of the women were postmenopausal and had pre- or stage-1 hypertension. For eight weeks, the participants consumed either 22 grams of a freeze-dried blueberry powder or 22 grams of a placebo. The researchers monitored both their blood pressure and their arterial stiffness.

After eight weeks, blood pressure and arterial stiffness had improved significantly in the group receiving the blueberry powder. The control group, on the other hand, displayed no changes. The blueberry group also had increased levels of beneficial nitric oxide, which may have been the actual mechanism improving their blood pressure and stiffness.

If you're postmenopausal or worried about your blood pressure or cardiovascular health, I think you should be consuming blueberries every day. If you're going to eat them as whole fruit, be sure to choose organic, as conventionally grown blueberries are typically heavily sprayed with pesticides. If you don't like the taste of blueberries or if they aren't in season or available in organic form near you, you can try Advanced Greens Formula instead. Not only will you get the benefits of blueberries, but many other fruits and veggies as well.

Yours for better health,
