I've warned you many times about genetically modified foods (GMO).  One study found that rats fed genetically modified potatoes suffered higher cancer rates than non-GMO fed rats.

Another study found that cows die when they eat corn that's genetically altered to be pesticide-resistant.  Still another found that hundreds of sheep and goats died within days of grazing on genetically modified cotton.

No one knows what the long-term effects of GMO foods will be on humans.  But by the time we find out, it may be too late.

And here's the really scary part:  If an organic cornfield is across the street from a GMO cornfield, all it takes is a little bit of wind and the GMO pollen can blow over to the organic field and contaminate those crops forever.

As a result of dangers like these, many counties in California have stepped up and are banning the use of GMO seeds entirely. It's a move I'm very happy to see.

Of course, the big chemical companies don't like this move because it threatens their profits. So they're trying to stop the counties from banning the seeds.

Since it's hard to fight each county separately, the Frankenfood mongers have been lobbying at the state level.  And now . surprise, surprise . the California legislature has proposed a new bill preventing county governments from passing any laws that ban GMO crops!

This is a catastrophe for those of us who care about our health and the health of future generations.

If you're a California resident, it is urgent that you call Senator Don Perata's office (916-651-4009) right away and ask him to oppose SB1056. He is the committee chairman hearing the bill, which is set for an imminent hearing. He has opposed it, but is under intense pressure from Monsanto to let it through.  In addition to Senator Perata, you should call your state representative.
